Big Hazards To Avoid When Building Your First Website

In today 's business world all small businesses should have some type of web presence. This web presence whether it is an information web page or an e-Commerce website is crucial to reaching, engaging and interfacing with certain growing market segments.

Today 's customer likes to spend their money in ways that are most convenient for them. This may mean that they want to spend 10 minute researching your product or service online before investing 30 minutes driving to your physical location.

Different groups of customers will desire to do business with you in various ways - depending on what creates the most value for them. Those who are 50+ in age may be fine with traditional 9:00 - 5:00 business hours for everything from information gathering to an actual sales transaction. Those who are in their 20 's will not be content.

They will want the ability to find information and perform transactions with your business via their computer or smart phone. This, to this age group, is considered a matter of convenience as it saves them time which in their fully connected, busy lifestyles, is a critical commodity. This thought process is even becoming prevalent in the Gen X and younger Baby Boom customer base who range in age from 32 - 50.

We have started several websites over the last year. We made some mistakes, but these mistakes have made us build a better foundation for the future. We thought that we'd share some of the lessons that we learned from these mistakes. Maybe you can learn from our experience so that you can focus more time and energy on the other mistakes that you are going to make as you grow your business.

Getting a website started is probably a breeze if you understand web design, programming, search engine optimization, key words, image loading, file transfers, web analytics and all the other bits and pieces of internet value creation.

If you do not have a basic understanding of these processes and the sequencing, priorities and relationships that they have to each other and your website success, then you are in for some frustrating and possibly costly mistakes.

One of the most important things that you can do when you start a website is to decide what you want the website to do. Who do you want the website to speak to? This will not only help you target your content to your audience, it will also help you to decide which website design, functions and features are best for your target audience.

Spend a considerable amount of time trying to decide if you want an information site or an e-Commerce site. This decision begins and ends with you knowing your customers and their needs.

When you have figured out what you think that you want then you should find someone to help you. Knowing what you want your site to do and then finding someone to help you do that is much better than turning over your web presence development to technicians. If you know your market you will want control in any interaction that you have with your customer.

A flashy website with problems and poor content will be of little value to your money spending customers. Remember, creating value for your business on the internet still requires prudent business skills - the internet is just a medium of interfacing with your customers. It has changed the communication rules but it still follows basic business principles.

Your customers are people with problems, concerns and interests. They want to feel as if they were treated great and got a good deal. Who wants to feel like they were treated like crap and like they got a bad deal? Only utilities can treat their customers that way and watch their sales grow. Making your customers feel great will make them come back. No technician is going to generate that type of feeling through your website.

The team that you select to help you design and build your website should be experienced. They should understand the type of site that you want as well as its purpose and functionality. If they do not, keep looking. This is not the time to get a low cost web developer who knows that they can build this type of website if they are just given the chance. Choosing this type of developer will cost you time and some functionality as there will probably be more minor glitches than you had anticipated.

Communicate clearly with your website development team. Make sure that you both understand the meaning of the different terms that you use. A due date to you may mean website completion date but to a developer it may mean beta site delivery date. Clear these points of potential confusion up at the very beginning of the website development project by making a simple project table that includes task, date, person responsible and notes. Also, it is very important that you determine who is going to develop and edit the content for the website. This may or may not be included in the website development project.

Make it easy for your customer to find what they need on your website. Your customers will visit your site to do one of two things. To find information to to take action.

Make it easy for them to do either. Taking action may mean getting more information or performing a transaction. Make sure that you have a way to capture some information from your potential customers in either case. An email address is a great start. You may want this later after you get the hang of creating business value on the internet.

Test everything on your website. Test it after every change. You would be surprised what a little glitch in code can do to a website. Just as improper grammar and poor punctuation can kill a business image, poor coding can destroy a web presence and any and all functionality that it may have.

Do not assume that just because it works on your website developer 's computer or on your computer that it will work with all of your potential customers' computers or browsers. Again, image and perception are important and they can be directly tied to building relationships on the internet. A PC and a MAC can display the same web pages differently. Internet Explorer and Firefox can also display the same web pages differently. Make sure that your team tests under all of these scenarios. Your target customers definitely will.

It is a good idea to you tie all payments to milestones such as:

20% - project start
35% - site concept acceptance
35% - site launch
10% - debugging and final acceptance

This type of payment schedule will help to insure that you get a product that you are happy with. Paying too much up front can slow down your website development or give you a site that is almost what you wanted. Neither one will make you happy.

Paying attention to some of the details when you are starting your first website can save you lots of time and money. Delays and mistakes with your website development can discourage potential customers from ever spending money with you.

Know your customers and make sure you give them what they need on your web real estate. Also, don't forget to include all of the other support services such as email management and customer relationship management. These other services, though not directly related to your website development will be key to your internet success.

Being aware of these hazards will help you create your business value on the internet and increase your entrepreneur profit.

How Design Fits Into Building A Good Web Site

What is a good web design? How does hiring a professional web designer help? These are questions I have been asked on numerous occasions. The best way to answer these questions is to explain why you need a good web designer.

To build a professional web site you require a professional design. A professional designer, whether they are from web design company, firm, agency or freelance, needs to be able to display a portfolio of their work. This portfolio should inspire you, allowing you to see what your web site can be.

While building the web design, your chosen designer should:

* Understand the business you are in.

The web designer should understand the business you are in so that they can tailor the design toward your business. This can be accomplished by meeting several times with the designer to talk about your requirements and help them to understand your business.

* Build an initial design using a graphic tool.

The web designer should build the initial design in a tool like Photoshop. This will allow you to view the design and make any desired changes.

* Revise the design.

The web designer should be able to work with you through several versions of the design to get it just the way you want it.

Once you are happy with the design, the next step is implementation. If you have chosen a web design company, firm or agency, they will have on staff people that can implement your chosen design.

If you have hired a freelance web designer, you can always hire a freelance web developer. A professional web developer should be able to take a well developed web design, and turn it into a professional web site.

After following this simple plan you should have a professional web site, without the headaches of building a site without a design.

Building Website—the 3 easy options

Without knowledge of html and other programming languages, building a website is a difficult task. Hiring professional web designer can cost you up to thousands dollar. In this articles I will shows you 3 cost-effective ways to get your site online fast and easy without having to spends thousand of dollars.

1. Using templates: With little knowledge of html, and other graphic software such as Photoshop and macromedia flash, you can save times and money in developing your website. Based on my experiences, using templates not only save time and money, it also adds professionalism to your websites, because our design templates can never beat the design of those professional templates designer. There are many templates available on the web for your website. The cost of templates ranges from free to US$200. However the average cost of a looking template is around US$50. If you have money to spend and want you site to be unique you have a choice to buy unique template which cost you around US$1,500. To look for website templates you can easily search in the search engine. One of my favorite places to shop for templates is www.templatemonster.com .

2. Content Management System: Is one of the most effective way of webmaster, because not only it saves time and money, most of the time it is optimized for search engine. Nowadays many webhost also provides free content management system that can be easily installed from webhosting control panel. Following are my favorite content management system:

a. WordPress: You can build an easy- to-update and manage using this software. It is the blog that allow you to update your site easily, and it attracts search engine robots each time you publish new contents. To customize your WordPress blog you can easily search for free themes and paid themes. My favorite place to search for free themes is http://themes.wordpress.net . If you prefer paid WordPress themes you can search in template monster for WordPress themes. One reason I like WordPress is it is easy to add more function to the blog. There are many plug-INS available freely on the internet; you can easily search for wordpress plug-ins in googles.

b. PHP-Nuke: Is a full features content management system. Because it comes with many functions, it is not easy to manage for new webmasters. But if you have time to spend you can play with this powerful content management system, I am sure there are many useful feature for you. Again, customization of this content management system is easy, because there are available themes on the internet.

c. Joomla: One of the most well-known among webmasters. It has professional looks and easy to navigates, and comes with many useful functions.
d. OScommerce: It is an open-source ecommerce shopping cart. It is ideal for webmaster who sales product on the internet. With a few step of configurations you can start to add your product to the website and start to sell quickly. Also OScommerce templates are readily available free or paid on the internet.

Above are my favorites tools to build a website, there are many content management systems available on the internet. If you’re lucky to have a webhost that comes with a Cpanel or Plesk control panel you can enjoy trying those soft wares in the Fantastico menu of the control panel.

3. Using online website builders: I believe it is the easiest way to get your site up and running quickly. The online website builders are designed for webmasters with little or no knowledge of website designing. Website builder build the website based on templates. Because it is easy to use and require little web development knowledge, it comes with limited features and functions. However I believe it is more than enough for small business websites. There are many online website builders, and most of them provide free webhosting services if you pay for online website builder monthly. After searching the internet for online website builders, I find these two powerful website builders: first the www.site2you.com and the other one is www.sitegaloreplus.com . If you have time you can try other website builder’s free trail and see if it suits your needs.

Designing your own website is a hard task, maintaining a website is a harder task. I hope that with little help from tools above you can save your precious time, and spend more of your time to promote and bring more business to your websites.

Building Your Own Website is Easy - A Tutorial

Building a simple website is easy, even for non-IT people. If you have the following basic requirements, then you can create your own website.

Basic Requirements:

  1. Basic knowledge of HTML

  2. Computer set & Internet Connection

  3. Website Design Layout or Template

  4. Website Content

  5. Domain Name and Web Space or Host
Let me explain to you each of the above requirements:

Basic Knowledge of HTML

A website is composed of one or more web pages. A page layout is produced by using html codes or tags. HTML means Hyper-Text Markup Language and tags are enclosed by < and > signs. If you have zero knowldge of html, well here is the outline of a web page:

Outline of a web page:

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

<html>

<head>

<title>

Here you will place the title of the page. The texts here are displayed at the topmost left of a browser or web page.

</title>

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

<meta name="keywords" content="you must type here the main keywords of your content like this keyword1,keyword2,keyword3,etc. Words that are frequently used in this page content must be included here for search engine optimization. />

&ltmeta name="description" content="You must type here the summary of this page content using the page's main keywords for search engine optimization" />

<meta name="author" content="Your name here" />

<meta name="copyright" content="The year you built your website" />

<style type="text/css">

This is the place for Cascading Style Sheets or known as CSS. CSS defines the styles you will use in your web page such as font color and size of the text, background image, boxes, etc. These are effected in the body but most of the style definitions affects only those areas where you use them.

</style>

</head>

<body>

Here you will implement the layout using style definitions you have made in the "style" section. Without putting anything here the page will be blank except for the title that will appear at the topmost left of the page. You will also place here the content of your website. It may be mixed of texts, images, audios and videos.

</body>

</html>

The above must be saved as a html page with extension of html or htm. Your homepage or the starting page must be named as index.html or index.htm. When you open a site like my site www.freetipsandwits.com, it will automatically open the index page (my site starts with index.php as my site is php-based). This is also the same with html page.

To see it with your two eyes, copy the above html codes from <html> to </html>, then open your Notepad and paste it. In the Notepad or its equivalent, Click File - Save - Type mywebpage.html or mywebpage.htm - Click All Files - Click OK. Then in the Windows Explorer or its equivalent, find the the file and open it...See the power of HTML. That's your first web page. With those few codes, you can create your own web pages. For more basics of creating a web page, click here.

Computer set & Internet Connection

This is a computer equipment (desktop or laptop computer) that has a modem and internet connection (Dial-up or DSL). This means that you can access or surf the web. You will be using an internet connection to upload your web page files and to browse your website in action after uploading. You may use your own computer or you may rent in internet cafe, whichever is more comfortable to you.

Website Design Layout or Template

Website Layout Design is the graphical presentation of your site in a web page. Like in Freetipsandwits.com, the page layout is composed of header box, right box, left box and footer box. The design layout will be your guide where to place your content in every web page.

If you don't have time to learn html or let's say, you are not interested in learning html, you still have options to have your web design layout. Buy or get free web templates from the web. If you have a budget and you want to have a design based on your preference, you may hire a coder or simply buy a web template. See our site or search Google by typing "web templates" or "free web templates".

Website Content

This is the meat of the website. Your website is nothing without a content. It is like a house without people and furnishings. People are looking for contents. They want something from your website.

The content is the physical presentation of the purpose of your website. It may be personal (about your personal life or life of other people), community (a forum or discussion of a group of people), free or non-profit services (a directory, educational, tutorial, freebies, etc.) or commercial (for selling or marketing products or services).

Your content may include texts, graphics, sounds, videos, programs, etc. depending on your purpose or on what you like other people or visitors to see in your site and on the available materials with you. But, putting sounds, videos or softwares make require an advanced knowledge of html and scripts.

You may source your content materials from the web, free or priced. Check our site or search Google by typing "free web templates", "web templates", "web template freebies" or other keywords that are appropriate based on your need.

Domain Names and Web Space

Domain Name

A domain name usually consists of two or more parts, separated by dots. This is the unique text name corresponding to the IP address of the website. The domain name of this site is FREETIPSANDWITS.COM. The rightmost label is what we called the top-level domain (TLD) such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .ws, etc... Sub-domains are the labels on the left next to TLD and are dependent on the domain to the right. "FREETIPSANDWITS" is the sub-domain (second-level domain) and dependent of the ".com" domain.

Choose a descriptive name for your site to give short information to your target visitors on what your site is all about. You may use your own name too if you want to. For search engine optimization, it is advisable that you name your site with descriptive keywords. Each word must be separated by hyphen or dash like best-online-business-ever.com, affiliate-marketing-tips.com and hot-product-reviews.com.

To have your own second-level domain name, you have to pay for registration on a yearly basis with ICANN-accredited website-registrars but you may register a name for a number of years paying the equivalent amount. TLD's have different prices some are cheaper than others but common TLD's such as .com, .net, and .org are more expensive.

You may also go for free sub-domain with sites offering free hosting but it will be a third-level domain like in geocities, your website address will be your-choice-name.geocities.com or in tripod, it will be your-choice-name.tripod.com. Your domain name will be depedent of geocities or tripod.

If you really want to build a website using your own tradename and would like to earn profit from it, it would be better to at least invest a little amount of money. You may check if the name you plan to give to your site is still available with GoDaddy.Com, Register.com or other "domain name registrars".

Web Space and Hosting

The next thing you need is the web space where you will place your registered domain name and other stuff for your site. Normally, domain names are offered with web space. If you register a domain, you will be given a free but limited web space.

Usually, a free web space is ad-supported and subject to a number of restrictions. Meaning, the hosting site will put an ad to your site without paying you and it will not allow you to do or put some stuff.

So, if you want a clean web space where you can do whatever you want "legally", it is advisable that you lease your own web space. It is also offered on a yearly basis but you may also lease it for a number of years.

You may buy or lease domain or web space separately. You may register a domain name from one website and lease a web space from another. If you register domain name separately from web host, then you need to link the namservers from your host to your domain name. The nameservers will be given to you by your host and you need to enter this to your domain DNS (Domain Name Servers) setup.

For paid and free domain name registrants and web hosts, check our site or search Google by typing "domain name and webhosting" or "domain name registration" or "web hosting".

The following are the easy, simple and complete procedures to build your own website:
  1. Determine your purpose of your website.

  2. Prepare all the materials to be placed in your site as your website content.

  3. Plan the lay-out or design of your site. Get free or buy template.

  4. Create web pages. Learn our tutorial on creating your own web page or use ready-made web templates.

  5. Name your site with keywords relevant to your site content. Check the availability.

  6. Buy domain name and web space or get free web-space.

  7. Upload your web pages. You may upload your web files by web browser or by ftp. Check your with your host for instruction on how to do it.

  8. Check your website live. Check all the links if all are working fine.

  9. Submit your site to search engines and directories to inform the world that you have built your own website.
Now, you may start building your own website and make money from it.
